97-Year-Old Arizona Woman Disenfranchised by Voter ID Law

June 11 — People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert guest-blogs on CrooksAndLiars.com about Arizona's voter ID law and how it's affected Shirley Preiss.

Preiss "was born in Kentucky in 1910 — a full 10 years before American women gained the right to vote. She first voted in a presidential election in 1932, for FDR. She's voted in every presidential election since, but that's all about to change due to Arizona's draconian voter ID law." Read more >>

Taking Action to Defend Democracy

A joint project of People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation, the Democracy Campaign's aim is to protect the fundamental right of every voter to have his or her vote accurately counted.

Through careful research, litigation, communication, and public education and mobilization, the Democracy Campaign will help inspire and support the kind of leadership needed to fix our broken electoral system and restore government by the people. But we must move now, with the requisite resources, if we are to put the needed changes in place in sufficient time to ensure fair, not flawed, elections in November 2008.

The campaign's agenda includes fixing security problems in electronic voting machines; putting a stop to intimidation and deceptive practices; and overturning voting restrictions and requirements that disenfranchise elgible voters without improving the integrity of elections.

Waging the Democracy Campaign

The Democracy Campaign is a joint project of People For the American Way and PFAW Foundation. PFAW is working for change in the states, in the courts, and on Capitol Hill.

PFAW Foundation is conducting nonpartisan public education and civic participation projects and two special nonpartisan projects that promote fair and equal access to the polls: Restore My Vote and Election Protection.
